Information

NZ North Island Championship 2022 is an official World Cube Association (WCA) sanctioned speedcubing competition. Speedcubing is solving the 3x3x3 Cube or other similar puzzles as quickly as possible. The competition is open to all competitors regardless of experience and skill, but certain event-based time limits will be in place so as to make sure we can stay on schedule and get through the days on time. No prior experience in WCA competitions is necessary, but competitors should be familiar with the WCA regulations.

In addition, NZ North Island Championship 2022 is the last regional championship of 2022 in the lead up to Nationals in December.

Q. How can I change my events?
A. You must make any change to your registered events by 28/08/2022. Contact the organisational team detailing your event changes.

Q. What time should I arrive at the competition?
A. You should be at the venue ready to compete at least 30 minutes before your first scheduled event, however if you wish to turn up earlier and help with the competition then please do. Please note the schedule is subject to change on the day.

Q. How old do I have to be to compete?
A. Anyone can compete at any age! We encourage anyone considering to compete to register as it will be a great experience regardless of age.

Q. How fast do I have to be to compete?
A. To compete you only need to know how to solve the cube! Please check the events tab for information in time limits for each event.

Q. What do I need to know before the competition day?
A. Before attending you should have read and understood the WCA regulations. You should also know when your events are scheduled throughout the day.
Video Competitor Tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPL3eV-A0ww
Written Competitor Tutorial: https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/edudoc/competitor-tutorial/tutorial.pdf

Q. How do I find out if I've progressed to the second round?
A. Times will be uploaded throughout the competition to WCA live. Please allow up to an hour from finishing your solves to them being uploaded. After all the times of a round have been entered, you can see if you are in the following round.

Q. Who can I ask for help on the day?
A. Your Delegates for this competition are Alex Asbery and David Lim feel free to ask them any questions you may have on the day.

Q. Can I help on the day?
A. Of course! Throughout the day we will need judges and runners so please see our Delegates to ask how you can best assist.

Q. Where can I ask other questions?
A. The organisational team can answer all your questions through the contact link on the info page. You can also find the delegate email addresses on the WCA website.

The obvious:

  • If you are sick or feeling unwell please stay home, you will be turned away at the door.
  • We will ask all attendees if they are required to be in self isolation. If you are please do not come to the competition as you will also be turned away.

Additional restrictions that will be in place for this competition:

  • Masks are required at all times while in the venue for those 12 years of age or over, this includes while you are competing
  • Hand sanitiser will be available for use at the puzzle hand in table and mandatory for those at the scrambling table
  • Social distancing is strongly encouraged while in all areas of the venue

Who can win the North Island Championship?
A: Officially the winner listed for all the events on the WCA website will be the overall winner in each event, however we will also have North Island podiums where those who have declared they are representing the North Island will have a separate podium and these will be the North Island champions for 2022.

How do I declare my region?
A: There is a drop down box on the registration page where you can select your region. This will be what is used to determine which island you are representing at the competition.

How often can I change the island that I am representing?
A: This will follow the same rules as changing the nation you represent in the WCA so you may only change this once per year and cannot change between the South Island Championship and the North Island Championship in the same year. You can however change in a new year if you have moved regions.

Where will the region information be posted?
A: For now this information will not be public other than which Island you are representing. However in the future we will add an option to the SNZ registration page where you can opt in or out of publicly listing your region for the purpose of creating regional rankings for all 17 official WCA events. These rankings will be dispayed on the SNZ website.

Why do you need to know my region?
A: This is to try and see where our competition attendees are travelling from so we can better cater future competitions to visit every region with cubers in them. As well as create the regional rankings list in the future.

Can I choose to not select a region?
A: Yes, this will however make you ineligible for North or South Island podiums.

Can I win a South or North Island podium if I do not represent New Zealand in the WCA?
A: No, this will be treated the same as a National Championship where you can still compete for the overall podiums but not the Regional champiosnship.

Why is there no FMC at North Island Championships this year?
A. In order to hold all of the other events with ample rounds and over the course of reasonable days we have made the decision to not host FMC at SIC22 or NIC22. Instead we will hold a simultaneous FMC competition later in the year where the Island champions will be crowned.

The 3x3x3 North Island Champion for 2022 will be awarded free registration to New Zealand Nationals 2022.
